The word Koi was first used in China about 2,400 years ago. The brocaded carp or the more popular term Nishikigoi as we now know them were created in Japan. They were bred not for food but for their beauty. This is where the term Living Jewel was first used to describe the graceful, wonderfully colored fish that graced their ponds. A few early specimens were gifted to the Emperor and many are today seen in the ornamental gardens that frequent Japan.
The Nishikigoi made their first appearance in the region of Niigata which is famous for its fish-farming. This is where the first colored mutants were selected from the fish destined for the dinner table. These lucky mutants were selectively bred to produce the wonderful selection of Koi that we know and love today.
The first home of Koi is Niigata but nowadays these wonderful fish are bred throughout Japan. Modern breeding techniques combined with the warmer climates in the south of Japan make it possible to acheive very good growth rates from the fry. A growth of 24 inches in three years is quite common
