How Shipping Live Koi Works (and How to Buy Well Remotely)

Half the best koi dealers in the country are nowhere near you. Overnight shipping is how the hobby solves that — and it works far better than most first-timers expect.

What actually happens to the fish

A shipped koi is fasted for 1–3 days (clean gut = clean water in the bag), bagged in a third of its volume of water and two-thirds pure oxygen, double- or triple-bagged, and packed in an insulated box — sometimes with heat or cold packs by season. Overnighted, a healthy koi rides this out comfortably; large fish and jumbo koi ship in bigger boxes or via airline cargo.

Reading a dealer’s shipping terms

Before ordering from anyone, find three things on their site (each dealer’s stated policies are summarized on their FindKoi profile):

1. Live-arrival guarantee — and its claim window. “Within 2 hours of delivery, with photos of the unopened bag” is standard; no guarantee at all is a red flag.
2. Shipping days — good shippers only send Monday–Wednesday so fish never sit in a depot over a weekend.
3. Weather holds — a dealer who delays your order during a heat wave is protecting your fish, not being difficult.

The video-selection ritual is the other trust signal: better dealers will send video of the specific fish — swimming, both sides — before it ships. This is the remote version of the in-person inspection from our first-koi checklist.

Arrival day, step by step

1. Be home. Overnight means a delivery window, not a suggestion.
2. Open the box right away and check the bag — photograph before opening if anything looks off.
3. Float the sealed bag in your quarantine tank (you have one, right?) for 15–20 minutes.
4. Net the fish into the tank; discard the shipping water.
5. Lights low, no food for 24 hours, then resume normal feeding.

When shipping is the right call
